Medicare and Dental Entitlements

The Federal government has introduced two initiatives which may entitle some patients to rebates on their dental work. The two initiatives are as follows.

Teen Dental Plan

This entitles children from eligible families aged 13-17 to a fully rebated preventative dental visit to the value of $153.45. This benefit is issued as a voucher and is automatically sent out to eligible children. Tendler Dental will honor these vouchers which can be redeemed for a check up, clean or other preventative services. Just let us know when you make the appointment that you will be bringing a voucher.

Chronic Disease Management

This benefit applies to patients who have a chronic condition (e.g. diabetes or asthma) which impacts on their oral health. Under this scheme patients are entitled to a rebate up to $4250 over two years towards their dental expenses (some out of pocket costs may still apply). To see if this applies to you, contact your GP for further information and if you are eligible your doctor will write up a care plan and lodge it with Medicare for approval.

Toothbrush Tips

  • Only use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles, never medium or hard.
  • Store toothbrushes separately so they do not touch other toothbrushes.
  • Store toothbrushes in clean airy place so they can dry out between uses.
  • Replace toothbrushes regularly and when they become ‘shaggy’ or clogged with toothpaste.
  • Replace toothbrushes after illness such as colds, flu or cold sores and mouth infections.

Did You Know?

That new born babies have none of the bacteria that causes caries (tooth decay). The bacteria is transmitted from parents by kissing or blowing on food before feeding.

When you were a baby you not only had taste buds on your tongue but also on the roof and sides of your mouth. As we grow they begin to disappear leaving us with taste buds mainly on our tongue. This is partially why our tastes change as we get older.
